Florals Part 2

Finished the pillow for my friends' wedding present.

It's really satisfying to see one of my designs physically realized.

Floral Knit

I spent most of the evening repairing old knit work from college

that will be made into a pillow for a friends wedding.

This weekend I went through my cedar chest of fabrics that I 

made in college.  It was really nice to see some of the work

again.

My first attempt at making buns.  Not a great technique.

Very excited about my first attempt to make baozi

from no recipes.  I had a little trouble pinching

the buns off at the top as you can see in the top

image, but they tasted really good.  Now all I need

is practice.

This weekend Jace and I decided to camp out downstairs by the fire and watch movies.

Jace's latest project, spray painting the tv the color 'biscuit.'

 Spent most of today home reading C. P. Snow's article on Balzac.

Then Jace and I walked to the bookstore downtown and I bought

Jonathan Kozol's Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools.

90210

Beverly Hills 90210 caused a stir in my family.  Or that is how it appeared to me when it aired in 1990.  Both of my sisters (being 11 and 8 at the time) had been talking about it before it came out and we were all pretty excited.  It is only now that I realize I was not quite 5 years old.  I don't remember feeling that young.  But both my sisters wanted to see it and I was the youngest so I didn't want to be left out of any grown up girl activity.  In the end I wasn't allowed to see it because I was too young and it was past my bedtime, but I eventually learned how to 1) stay up past my bed time and 2) sneakily watch the show from the kitchen under the guise of making a snack.

90210 taught me so much.  It taught me what cocaine was and that breast cancer looks like chewing gum.  I don't know if this actually happened in one of the episodes, but I seem to remember Dylan sniffing coke out of a ring he was wearing on his finger.

 

I was also confused by the Luke Perry and Jason Priestley.  They had the same hair so it was years before I realized they were two distinct characters.

Lazy Winter

Very hard adjusting to the work week after the Thanksgiving break.  Glad that the weekend is approaching.

Weekend plans: Holiday parties, exercise class, textile conservation, and rifling through thrift stores.  Maybe I'll make that toothsome frittata with swiss chard and fontina I made of Thanksgiving break...  



Recently watched: Cinemania

We checked this movie out from the library expecting it to be bad (there is an act of abandon when checking out library movies because you aren't paying for it, so you find something and think, "This may very likely be unwatchable" as you stuff it into your one dollar library tote bag along with the rest of your random hoard of dvds and books).  But we ended up enjoying it.  Each cinema-obsessed person really came to it from a different angle. 

Recently read: reread The Cat Inside by William S. Burroughs and a lot of Chris Rock interviews.  He is killing it.

New Knit Machine Project

I have completed my fair share of samples on my new

knit machine and it is high time to start a sweater for Jace.

 Picked out the yarns.  I am not 100% happy with the colors I

bought, but the selection at the store I went to wasn't great.

 Then I rolled the yarn into balls and that takes a long time.

*The knit machine manual instructions against this method

of yarn preparation, but I don't have a winder, and I haven't

had any trouble knitting with yarn prepared this way.

Neighborhood

Sitting here having a glass of wine trying to finish a recap for work.  Church bells are playing.
Ebe is asleep on the fur and Jace is working on homework.

Every night around 11 pm someone in our neighborhood starts playing the trumpet.  I like it so much that I feel sad when I hear it because I anticipate a time when I will no longer be able to hear it.

Watching: The Year My Voice Broke and Flirting

Eating: Ethiopian food for lunch, salami and cheddar chive cheese on thickly sliced sesame bread for dinner
